The customer have had the same vendor for 25 years... and now it is time for them to go. Outlined below are the perils and pitfalls of finally going to market to replace an embedded incumbent vendor. When a client finally takes to market a position on which a single vendor has had an effective monopoly for decades, perhaps one of the greatest challenges is creating a fair procurement process (e.g. that does not penalize the incumbent while encouraging a wide range of innovative proposals from new proponents) that still encourage creative thinking by the proponents. Walking the thin line between these two extremes will allow the customer to procure the best, most effective proponent. Outlined below are ten pitfalls to avoid in implementing a new procurement, in which the existing (and perhaps entrenched) incumbent vendor can participate.
